Bulgarian cable television TV7 transmitted a short interview with Plamen Petrov about digital physics.
Bulgarian national radio Darik transmitted a short talk with Plamen Petrov about the "Universe as a computer" idea.
The following brief article has been acceted for publication:
This work will appear also in the Fourth Proceedings of the International Conference of Complex Systems published by the New England Complex Systems Institute and Springer-Verlag.
The following talk has been added to our Publications page:
We would like to recommend this talk to anybody who is not familiar with the NKS book: the text is well-written, concise, up to the point. Our only disappointment comes from the fact that Wolfram still misses to give any credits to Fredkin and Zuse for the "Universe as a CA" idea...
Paul Saretok maintains a CA page full of beautiful CA applets. Check it out:

There were 158 YES votes and 10 NO votes, for a total of 168 valid votes. There were 4 abstains and 6 invalid ballots. The official message announcing results of the vote is available here.
We would like to direct your attention to the recently posted Call For Votes (CFV) to establish a new "Big-8" newsgroup, sci.physics.discrete (SPD). SPD will be a place for civilized discussion of discrete (i.e., digital) theories of physics.
We urge everyone with an interest in this subject to vote YES on the ballot. The official CFV is posted at news.announce.newgroups; if you don't have a newsreader, you can get a copy of the ballot here:
http://www.uvv.org/cgi-bin/getmsg/2613
The voting instructions are about three quarters of the way down, in a section entitled "HOW TO VOTE". You just cut & paste the ballot part into an e-mail, put in your vote, and mail it to:
We highly encourage everyone to contact others who may be interested in this subject. Send them a copy of this announce, or a direct link to the CFV.
The complete NKS book is now available for free online:
The following two papers by Fredkin have been added to our "Digital Physics/Mechanics Publications" list:
Two new papers from our "DP Series" project are now available online (in HTML and PDF formats):
The new additions include:
Our Digital Physics Links page has been updated.
Among other things, we would like to mention explicitely the Visions of Chaos software, developed by Jason Rampe.
"Visions Of Chaos" is a Windows application that generates cellular automata (including 1D, 2D and 3D CAs), L-Systems, fractals, attractors and other chaos related systems. Among the unique features of this software are the creation of AVI Movies and MIDI music based on CAs.
This is certainly one of the most versatile simulators we have ever seen. Highly recommended!
You are welcome to check out the official Web page of the "Series...":
https://digitalphysics.org/Publications/Petrov/DPSeries/
This page will contain an up-to-date info about the whole project that will include not only the officially submitted papers, but also some drafts and even draft notes...
Two classical works has been added:
A technical report "Discrete Mathematics and Rechnender Raum (Computing Space) -Part 1-. Cellular Structured Space (Rechnender Raum) and Physical Phenomena -Part 2-" by Konrad Zuse. The first part of the report contains a lecture presented at the workshop "Scientific Computing in der Theoretischen Physik" at Freie Universität Berlin in March 1994; the second part includes an updated version of a previous report. Both deal with "Rechnender Raum" ("Calculating Space", or "Computing Cosmos"), a topic that Zuse discussed earlier in a book.
The Introduction to the book "Discrete Models" by Donald Greenspan, Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, 1973. (Many thanks to W. Edwin Clark for making this text available on the Web).
Stephen Wolfram's book "A New Kind of Science" (NKS) has been included in our Digital Physics/Digital Mechanics publications list. Plamen Petrov is preparing an in-depth review on this work. Meanwhile, please check out Edwin Clark's collection of NKS reviews.
The new items include:
Our Digital Physics publications page has been updated. A lot of papers are now available online; also some translations to other languages have been added as well.
Added proper links to papers on Ed Fredkin's new site: Digital Philosophy.
We've added some links to Ross Rhodes' web pages: "The Bottom Layer". This is a fine collection of essays and additional links regarding Digital Physics. Check it out!
Other than this, nothing new is really happening. Some occasional discussion occurrs now and then on the . It looks like the release of Stephen Wolfram's forthcoming book, "A New Kind of Science" has been pushed back to 2001.
Mail messages for are being converted to HTML.
Two new papers have been submitted by Tom Ostoma and Mike Trushyk. The first is titled, "Special Relativity Derived from Cellular Automata Theory: The origin of the universal speed limit" and is available for download at [OT98a]. The next is titled, "Electro Magnetic Quantum Gravity: On the Quantum Principle of Equivalence, Quantum Inertia, and the Meaning of Mass" and is also available for download at [OT98b].
Finally, mail messages for are being converted to HTML for easy on-line viewing.
The Digital Physics Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) file is underway.
The ZigZag automaton is the newest candidate for passing minimality.
We have a new movie of TCA running for 400 generations.
CABuilder is a tool for designing 3D homogenious cellular spaces. Some new and interesting 3D automata were created this way.
We've moved the DP files to another location for easier editing and better page-counting statistics -- some links to our pages may need to be updated. We've also made some other minor adjustments here and there, such as seperating the Works page into the Publications and Automata pages.
The DP e-mail list is a forum for discussing issues in Digital Physics. Please see the page for more information and archives of the list.
Plamen Petrov shares some additional thoughts about his paper.
A few snapshots from our trip to Boston for PhysComp96.
The Digital Physics web pages have undergone a complete overhaul. We've been working on the graphics and text for the last few weeks. Almost everything looks new.
